drive reads/writes dvd, not cd.

The drive will not read cd's. it does read dvd's

I've tried uninstalling the driver and scanning for hardware change.. didn't
work

I've searched the registry for filters.. no upper filter , no lower filters
to be found.. so i can't delete them.

any other suggestions. Restore?

Combo optical drives have two lasers - one for DVDs and one for CDs. It
sounds as though the laser for the CD part of your drive has died. Contact
HP for replacement of the drive. If the machine is out of warranty and is a
desktop (as opposed to a laptop), you can replace the drive yourself for
around $50.
