I'm now trying to set up windows mail, using my gmail account, but seem to
be having problems. here's the error message:

The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'test from windows mail',
Account: 'windows mail', Server: 'smtp.gmail.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I thought for gmail it was:

pop.gmail.com
smtp.gmail.com

What am I doing wrong?

Go to tools>accounts>select your account>properties>advanced tab, change
port 25 to 465>apply/ok
See:

Set up your gmail account according to all the settings provided by them,
especially the port numbers!!
The links describe setup for Outlook Express, Windows mail setup is exactly
the same.
Check your settings as per:

thanks mac, sounds like you know what you're talking about. I never would
have guessed I had the wrong port.

Shouldn't this stuff be automated by now?

Hard to automate when each mail provider has their own unique
mail server names. Also, there are four different port possibilities
for current SMTP servers (25, 80, 465, 587), as well as other settings
like SSL and SMTP-AUTH. An automated procedure would have to
know which settings each of thousands of mail providers uses, and
that information changes all the time.
