Trying to Reinstall XP

I lost my old XP cd and thus had to get a new one. I reformatted the hardrive
to wipe everything clean due to some nasty viruses. The XP install goes fine
until I get to the point where it asks for the serial code. It does not like
the serial code from the new cd. Is the computer looking for the old serial
code? How do I remeday this situation since I no longer have an opporating
system due to the reformat?

I don't think that is what I need. Maybe I should restate the problem. At the
end the installation the program requests the serial code from the cd. Upon
entering that code I get a message inidicating that it is invalid. I don't
beleive these codes expire from what I have read so I thought that maybe the
machine still sees the old code in the registry and is expecting it istead of
the new code from the new cd.

I don't understand after reformating it will not see anything prior. Reyurn
the cd you bought because it may have the wrong key for what ever reason

Chris;
Are you using the Product Key that came with that CD?
There are many different types and they are not interchangeable.

There is a serial stock number on the CD package but that is
not the key that is needed, Look for a 25 digit
alpha-numeric (5 groups of 5) in a form such as
W6YKK-XX22X-...)
