Hi, I'm trying to delete a file that windows won't allow me to delete. It
says it's being used by another person or program. It shouldn't be. It's
just a file I cancelled during downloading and is now stuck on the desktop.
Help!! Thanks

Hi Duff,
Try this first and see if the download file will be deleted:
Clear your caches and make a disk clean up this should clean up up the file
left on the download folder.
If still no joy try to take the ownership of the file read this article;
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421
or http://www.ccleaner.com *becareful though on what you are deleting*
Also scan for Malware, hence you said you halted the download?

HTH.
Please let us know.

- Open Task Manager.
- Kill Explorer.exe and whole process tree.
- From the Task Manager File menu/ New Task open a command prompt (cmd).
- Navigate to the Desktop Folder (cd %userprofile%\desktop )
- Use the del command to delete the file.
- From the Task Manager File Menu restart Explorer.exe.

If it don't work try again from safe mode start.

Locked Files Wizard formerly CopyLock is a simple assistant that allows you to
replace, to move, to delete and to rename one or more files or folders which are in
use by the system or any other process.
CopyLock is a small program that allows replacing, moving, renaming or deleting one
or many files which are currently in use (e.g. system files like comctl32.dll, or
virus/trojan files.)

Hi there Duffshot,
I've been having the same problem. I used TaurArian's suggestion of Killbox:
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip
It's not straightforward because it doesn't seem to actually delete the file
straight away or even when you set it to delete on reboot. But after I
rebooted and then tried to delete the troublesome file it did work.
It's worth a try.
