Trouble with booting up - Unmountable Boot Volume

hi all.

my parents computer has started "looping" on bootup, it gets to the XP
screen then restarts. I have seen the blue screen with
Unmountable_Boot_Volume, I have read various articles concerning such.

Story so far!!... I have created my six floppies, and loaded unto computer,
I get to set-up screen, and I get:

Setup Windows XP
To repair XP installation using R console press R
or Quit

I selected the second one and was given a command line
C:\> to which I typed chkdsk /p (and also tryed chkdsk /r
i got
autochk.exe could not be located, i typed c:\windows\system 32

no good

tried all the usual F8's, safe mode, last good configuration etc, dont work
or hang.

If you could answer in lay-mans terms as I am only a newbie to this kind of
stuff it would help alot...cheers

Chkdsk looks for Autochk.exe in the boot directory, if it can't find it
there it looks for it on the CD-ROM and if it can't find it there it
prompts the user for the location. Use your XP CD, if you don't have an
XP CD, (which you probably don't since you are using the 6 floppy set),
look in those floppies and see if you can locate the file then when
prompted insert the proper diskette in the drive and point is to the
location. You can copy the file from a working XP installation if need
be. Another alternative would be to mount your disk to another XP
installation and run a chkdsk on it from the working installation.
