Trouble with Anti-Vir

W

Will Naught

Today, Microsoft Anti-spy notified me that my Anti-Vir software had
changed and asked if I wanted to accept that. Thinking it was a normal
upgrade I elected to approve this change.

But ever since then I have not been able to access the
http://www.free-av.com/ site. Anyone else experience this?

Working fine here, if a little slow to load - it was fine last night
too when I downloaded the latest defs file.

On Fri 04-Mar-2005 15:08, I too couldn't access the site.

I have Anti-Vir installed on my home machine. I installed it a couple of
weeks ago. A few days ago, it urged me to update it. The thing is, I was
never able to do this. Thinking that it might actually just be my
firewall that's blocking it off, I tried to access the site from the
office, just now. So I can't access www.free-av.com from either home or
office, which suggests that there's something wrong with the site.

Bit disappointing, really.

I just tried www.free-av.com, and it is there but loads very slowly.

I used my installed antivir yesterday, and used the update function in
the program, it seemed to work normally.

Maybe they are attacked by some script kids so it slows everything down.

Very slow here after the update.

The site responds to pings from here, but trying to access it from a browser
only times out.

Nah. I was disappointed some years ago when I actually used this software.
Suddenly the site vanished, and I never heard about AntiVir again until just
a few months ago. I'm not going to pretend to be surprised if it vanishes
all over again.

I made 3 attempts to download the latest AntiVir update. On each
occasion the update aborted after 45 minutes. I have been a faithful
AntiVir user for years but this is too much - I uninstalled it and got
ClamWin. So far I am very pleased with it. ClamWin found something
AntiVir has been overlooking. ClamWin does take about twice as long to
scan my hard drive, but the updates are much quicker to download.

As luck would have it, Sourceforge announced ClamWin as their project of
the month for February. It's Open Source. Link here:
http://sourceforge.net/potm/potm-2005-02.php

ClamWin relies on Clamav (Clam AntiVirus), which is also Open Source,
and can be downloaded from:
http://www.clamav.net/binary.html#pagestart

I haven't tried either of them, though.

I have clamwin on my Ubuntu Linux box...I have never used it on Windows.
I have Anti-vir on my Windows box and with the exception of a couple of
false positives and some slow downloads, it is a great program. The
Germans can really produce some powerful software.

I may give Clamwin a try.. Not sure.

I just clicked it, and it loaded in less than a second. I use Avast, BTW.

I use it as a backup. Slow scans, but so far, pretty reliable. I sped
up the scans a bit by having it ignore certain file types (avi, mpg,
wmv, mp3...you get the picture)

i think what you should really be doubting your acceptance of is that
m$ crapware itself...

ClamWin is a strange program, supposed to work in W98. In W98SE. It ran once,
worked fine. Never ran again.
