Trouble shooting screen fading

New to this forum and looking for help. I am having trouble with my labtop
which is now on start up flickering on start up. When the desktop finally can
be seen, before all applications have been loaded, then screen starts to
change color (like bleacing effect) goes from white to black and locks up.
After enough time has passed for the screen saver to pop up, the desktop will
re-appear briefly then the same problem occurs. Virus, bad hardware?

Thank you for your input and help in advance.

The graphics card or monitor is failing. A quick test would be to push
on one corner of the screen while you pull on the other corner. Or rock
it open/closed. If the screen goes in and out, the ribbon cable to the
monitor could be damaged or loose, or the monitor could be damaged
internally. A second test would be to add an external monitor to see if
it works properly. If so, it's the laptop monitor, not the graphics card.
