Trouble sending mail

I am having trouble sendig email out from Windows Mail (using Vista).
Everything has been working fine for months, then it got a bit sticky over
the last couple of days, but if I tried repeatedly it would eventually
capitulate. Now it won't send anything out and I get:

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'. Subject 'Re: A
new tip has been posted', Account: 'pop3.zoom.co.uk', Server:
'mail.btinternet.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '553 From: address

http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/manage/sendfrom-07.html',
Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 553, Error Number: 0x800CCC78

Anyone got any ideas?

If you're using Outlook, you'll get better answers if you ask in a
newsgroup meant for Outlook users, such as:

microsoft.public.outlook.general

Mention which version of Outlook you're using, and that you're
using it under Vista, in case it matters.

I get exactly the same. But I don't use Yahoo client and the stuff they tell
you does not relate to Outlook Express so it's useless. I spoke to BT person
in India and they said it was not BT's problem and I should contact my domain
provider. I am using mail.jaydenson.com as the POP3 and mail.btinternet.com
as the SMTP was authentication. It's always worked until today. Any ideas?

See if you have fully followed the btinternet instructions:

<http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/forums/index.cfm?action=showthread&threadid=289750&forumid=20>

Also, many email servers won't accept spaces or CAPITAL LETTERS
in your username. Some require that your username be followed by
the part of your email address starting with @, and some require this
to be left out. Many email servers insist that you use CAPITAL and
lowercase letters in the right places in your password. You may want
to check if btinternet has started using tighter requirements there than
before.

In some countries, Yahoo has tightened up their email procedures,
so what worked yesterday may not work today. Specifically, you can
no longer send with a 'From' address that is not authorized by Yahoo.
Note that 'mail.btinternet.com' is actually an alias for a Yahoo mail server,
which is why you fall under Yahoo rules when sending via that mail server.

You have two workarounds:
1) Use a Yahoo-authorized 'From' email address, or
2) Use a different SMTP server.

Besides the two workarounds I mentioned, Phil Gyford has now
documented the procedure for getting Yahoo to verify and accept
your non-btinternet email address:

Problems sending emails.

Are you with BT Internet, BT Yahoo or Yahoo ?

Do you have additional email addresses (accounts) set up ?

Have you suddenly had problems sending emails from these additional email
addresses ?
(although emails sent from your BTInternet, BTYahoo or Yahoo email address
are not affected).

BT have admitted there has been a problem since the 12 March 2008 – see
http://help.btinternet.com/yahoo/help/servicestatus/

Typical error message from outgoing failed email :-

The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender's
e-mail address. The sender's e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'.
Subject 'test', Account: 'Compuserve.com', Server: 'mail.btinternet.com',
Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '553 From: address not verified; see
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/manage/sendfrom-07.html',
Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 553, Error Number: 0x800CCC78

Why is it happening

Yahoo mail has made some changes aimed at cutting down the amount of SPAM
generated from their email customers. BT use Yahoo mail. These changes have
caused the problems many of us are now experiencing.

Up to the 12 March 2008 any additional email accounts set up in Outlook,
Outlook Express or similar email client software had to have what is known as
“SMTP authentication†enabled. This was supposed to identify to the remote
mail server (BT Yahoo or Yahoo) that the email was originating from an
authenticated source. From the 12th March 2008 this was still needed, but
additional checks were now required by Yahoo mail.

Wouldn’t it have been nice if they had warned us all !
Wouldn’t it have been nice if they had posted clear details of a solution !
It would appear that BT don’t know there is a solution – or perhaps they
feel the solution is too complicated for their customers to follow !

There is a SOLUTION !!!

Yahoo (but not BT yet !!) have provided details of a fix for their customers
which BT customers can follow with some scuttle changes. Basically you now
need (in addition to the SMTP authentication) to inform Yahoo of all the
additional email addresses you might be sending from and which will be going
through their mail server.

You can find Yahoo’s help page at :-

http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/manage/sendfrom-07.html#

Details of a fix for BT customers

1. You need to log on to your usual BT webmail page. For example if you
have a BTInternet email address, go to www.btinternet.com - you actually end
up at
https://login.yahoo.com/config/login_verify .......
2. Sign in with your btinternet user name and password
3. Click on “Mail†- under BTY! services in the left hand lower box.
4. Click on “Options†- extreme right hand end of the screen in line with
the 4 Tabs.
5. Click on “Mail Accountsâ€. You now need to add each of your additional
(non-BTInternet) email addresses
6.Click “Addâ€.
7.In the box, enter an account name for your own reference (for example,
“Beeb.net accountâ€) and click “Continueâ€.
8.Look now for two boxes. In the first one, put your name which you’d like
others to see when they get email from this address. In the second one enter
your non-BT email address (for example (e-mail address removed). You’ll be asked to
verify this other address in an email we will send to you there.) Click
“Continueâ€.
9.Next you'll see "Step 3 Setup Mail Server." Click “Skip this Stepâ€.
10.On the page that opens, check to make sure you’ve entered the correct
email address. If you need to make any changes, click “Edit Addressâ€. If it
looks fine, click “Send Verification†to generate the email we send to you to
make sure this is an actual account you use. We need to do this to help
prevent spam!
11.The “Verify Account†page opens. Here’s the easiest way to complete your
setup and start sending mail from the new address:
a)Leave this "Verify Account" browser page open.
b)In a different browser window sign into your non-BT email account using
Webmail or use your usual email program to check for new mail. You might
have to wait a bit to allow it to arrive through the ether !
c)Look for an email from Yahoo! Member Services, and open it.
d)Copy the “confirmation code†in the last line of the email by either
double-clicking it, or clicking and dragging over it, then either clicking
Copy from the Edit menu or pressing Ctrl + “câ€. (Mac users press Command +
“câ€.)
e)Get back on the “Verify Account†browser page and Paste that confirmation
code in the box beside “Confirmation Code:â€. You can paste by clicking Paste
in the Edit menu, or by pressing Ctrl + “vâ€. (Mac users press Command + “vâ€.)
f)At the bottom of the page, click “Verify Accountâ€.
g)OK, last step! A sign-in page opens with your BT Internet email address
already filled in. Enter your password.
h)You’re done. See the new account in the list on your Mail Accounts page?
Now you should be able to again send from your non-BT email account using
either your usual email client program or from Webmail. That's it! People
receiving the message will see it as being sent from that address.

12. Repeat from step 6 above for any other non-BT email accounts you may have.

Hope I'm not repeating anyone elses comments but the quickest solution is to
change your smtp from mail.btinternet.com to smtp.mail.yahoo.com. This is the
advise that the BT Tech guys are giving out to customers and it works.

I have had this problem since Friday 21 March. What I find annoying is that
BT have not put anything on their web site to inform us and we are paying for

In some countries, Yahoo has tightened up their email procedures,
so what worked yesterday may not work today. Specifically, you can
no longer send with a 'From' address that is not authorized by Yahoo.
Note that 'mail.btinternet.com' is actually an alias for a Yahoo mail server,
which is why you fall under Yahoo rules when sending via that mail server.

You have two workarounds:
1) Use a Yahoo-authorized 'From' email address, or
2) Use a different SMTP server.

I am having trouble sendig email out from Windows Mail (using Vista).
Everything has been working fine for months, then it got a bit sticky over
the last couple of days, but if I tried repeatedly it would eventually
capitulate. Now it won't send anything out and I get:

problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the

Hope I'm not repeating anyone elses comments but the quickest solution is to
change your smtp from mail.btinternet.com to smtp.mail.yahoo.com. This is the
advise that the BT Tech guys are giving out to customers and it works.

I have had this problem since Friday 21 March. What I find annoying is that
BT have not put anything on their web site to inform us and we are paying for
this service. Please everyone who sees this post call BT customer service

BT have admitted there has been a problem since the 12 March 2008 - see
http://help.btinternet.com/yahoo/help/servicestatus/

Typical error message from outgoing failed email :-

The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender's
e-mail address. The sender's e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'.
Subject 'test', Account: 'Compuserve.com', Server: 'mail.btinternet.com',
Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '553 From: address not verified; seehttp://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/manage/sendfrom-07.html',
Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 553, Error Number: 0x800CCC78

Why is it happening

Yahoo mail has made some changes aimed at cutting down the amount of SPAM
generated from their email customers. BT use Yahoo mail. These changes have
caused the problems many of us are now experiencing.

Up to the 12 March 2008 any additional email accounts set up in Outlook,
Outlook Express or similar email client software had to have what is known as
"SMTP authentication" enabled. This was supposed to identify to the remote
mail server (BT Yahoo or Yahoo) that the email was originating from an
authenticated source. From the 12th March 2008 this was still needed, but
additional checks were now required by Yahoo mail.

Wouldn't it have been nice if they had warned us all !
Wouldn't it have been nice if they had posted clear details of a solution !
It would appear that BT don't know there is a solution - or perhaps they
feel the solution is too complicated for their customers to follow !

You can find Yahoo's help page at :-

http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/manage/sendfrom-07.html#

Details of a fix for BT customers

1. You need to log on to your usual BT webmail page. For example if you
have a BTInternet email address, go towww.btinternet.com- you actually end
up at
https://login.yahoo.com/config/login_verify.......
2. Sign in with your btinternet user name and password
3. Click on "Mail" - under BTY! services in the left hand lower box.
4. Click on "Options" - extreme right hand end of the screen in line with
the 4 Tabs.
5. Click on "Mail Accounts". You now need to add each of your additional
(non-BTInternet) email addresses
6.Click "Add".
7.In the box, enter an account name for your own reference (for example,
"Beeb.net account") and click "Continue".
8.Look now for two boxes. In the first one, put your name which you'd like
others to see when they get email from this address. In the second one enter
your non-BT email address (for example (e-mail address removed). You'll be asked to
verify this other address in an email we will send to you there.) Click
"Continue".
9.Next you'll see "Step 3 Setup Mail Server." Click "Skip this Step".
10.On the page that opens, check to make sure you've entered the correct
email address. If you need to make any changes, click "Edit Address". If it
looks fine, click "Send Verification" to generate the email we send to you to
make sure this is an actual account you use. We need to do this to help
prevent spam!
11.The "Verify Account" page opens. Here's the easiest way to complete your
setup and start sending mail from the new address:
a)Leave this "Verify Account" browser page open.
b)In a different browser window sign into your non-BT email account using
Webmail or use your usual email program to check for new mail. You might
have to wait a bit to allow it to arrive through the ether !
c)Look for an email from Yahoo! Member Services, and open it.
d)Copy the "confirmation code" in the last line of the email by either
double-clicking it, or clicking and dragging over it, then either clicking
Copy from the Edit menu or pressing Ctrl + "c". (Mac users press Command +
"c".)
e)Get back on the "Verify Account" browser page and Paste that confirmation
code in the box beside "Confirmation Code:". You can paste by clicking Paste
in the Edit menu, or by pressing Ctrl + "v". (Mac users press Command + "v".)
f)At the bottom of the page, click "Verify Account".
g)OK, last step! A sign-in page opens with your BT Internet email address
already filled in. Enter your password.
h)You're done.

We're not an open relay. I ran the test at abuse.net and we passed.
I've checked all of the RBL's and we're not listed. We're an
educational institution. We don't spam anyone. I'd taser anyone here
that I caught spamming through our mail server. Now, for whatever
reason Yahoo has cooked up, we can't send email to anyone with a
yahoo.com email. We get a rejection message. The error below is
straight out of our server logs. It's from *my* work email address to
*my* yahoo mail address. The subject was "test" and the body of the
email said "test to see I can get this"

I have no idea why you put this post as a reply in this thread.

Do you have reverse DNS enabled? Some mail hosts are refusing mail from
servers that do not have reverse DNS enabled.

G

Gary VanderMolen

Not sure what you expect us to do about it.
It's not a Windows Mail client issue. We have no clout with the
Yahoo mail server admins.

Frank,

Some of my emails are being rejected because "your host does not have a
functioning reverse DNS (PTR) entry". I'm assuming this is a host server
(IP) setting. I have contacted my IP about this over the past several months
and they say they will work on it, but to date they have not fixed this. Is
there something I can do about this on my computer or do I have to get the IP
to do this? If it's an IP problem, do you have any suggestions that I might
give them to fix this?

There is nothing you can do from your end to fix that DNS problem.
The best workaround is to use a different SMTP server for now.
One solution is to get a free Gmail account, configure it for POP access,
and use it for your sending chores. Gmail allows you to register your
choice of From address, so your correspondents won't know the difference.
