Sending email

Gary Lounton

I'm starting to get the following message when I'm sending emails, I've
never had any problems sending mail and I've only started to get this over
the last few days, any suggestions?

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'.
Subject 'Mortgage', Account: 'pophost.123-reg.co.uk', Server:
'mail.btinternet.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '553 From: address
not verified; see
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/manage/sendfrom-07.html',
Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 553, Error Number: 0x800CCC78

Does your connection to that server cross over from one internet provider's
equipment to another's on the way to the server? This often happens if
you're using a wireless connection and happen to connect through a
neighbor's wireless server instead of your own. Connections to port 25
that have such a crossover are often blocked to cause trouble for spammers.

Also, btinternet.com may be insisting you use a From: address that ends in
@btinternet.com so they can check it is a valid address.

You may want to check your setup, but use only the outgoing server
part of these instructions:

<http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/forums/index.cfm?action=showthread&threadid=289750&forumid=20>

These instructions were written for Outlook Express, but should also
work under Windows Mail. Note that they allow you to use port 587
for the outgoing mail server instead of port 25, and this should avoid
any block on port 25. To change the port nunber, click on Tools,
then Accounts, then your 'pophost.123-reg.co.uk' account, then
Properties, then Advanced. Click at the end of the 25, backspace
over it, type 587, then click Apply, then OK, then Close.

Did you go to that URL and read the explanation?
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/manage/sendfrom-07.html

The 'From' address you used, '(e-mail address removed)'
is not a verified address for that SMTP server. Follow the procedure
given in that Yahoo URL to make your 'From' address verified.

Mail providers are continually reviewing and tightening up their procedures
so don't be surprised when something that worked last week doesn't
work this week.
