Trouble installing XP

Mike

I recently upgraded my motherboard to a Gigabyte GA-7VAXP
and processor to an AMD XP2700. I was able to boot
initially but removed the HD, put it in my old case, then
returned it to the new case. The upgraded PC now won't
boot up.
The bios recognizes the drive (name, size, etc.) but I
can't seem to write to it. I've tried different drives and
cables and jumpers are correct.
When trying booting up I get the "windows did not shut
down properly" screen. When trying to boot in safe mode I
get as far as the amdagp.sys file then it hangs. When
trying to re-install XP it loads the drivers then freezes
at "setup is intalling..." message. Tried win2k with the
same result. I've even tried installing on a clean on a
newly formatted (on another PC) disk. If I boot with a
98se disk I can't see the hard drive (yet fdisk reads
it!).
I've removed every thing but the main drive and CD-Rom,
disabled raid in the bios and most settings are on auto. I
think there are drivers on the mobo cd that I have to
install but can't access the hd. It worked at one point so
I'm not sure. I'm using 1 gig of samsung ddr400 ram. tried
my old ram and still no luck.
I've seen lots of posts with the same problems, tried many
of the suggestions with no luck.
Suggestions??
