Trouble installing/uninstalling

When I try to uninstall or install something (doesn't matter what it is), InstallShield Wizard gets to the "performing requested operation" portion of the (un)install and it hangs. Task Manager doesn't say that it's not responding, it just doesn't do anything.
I've tried disabling both my anti-virus and firewall programs thinking they might be the reason, but to no avail.
This is a recent problem, just occured out of the blue, and it's incredibly frustrating.
Please help.

I'm running an AMD Athalon 2074Mhz CPU with WinXP; Norton Anti-Virus and Norton Personal Firewall
