Trouble installing SP2

Dena

I am trying to install SP2 on an Athlon machine that has been fully patched.
I have tried to run Adaware and Spybot to clean the machine but they only
work in Safe Mode. I have tried to install SP2 in safe mode but the install
always stops partway through...different places. Sometimes it goes as far as
installing files but it never finishes. I have run an updated antivirus and
checked but found no viruses. I have disabled the virus checker during
install. I have checked the devices in safe mode, deleted and let windows
reload them. That didn't work either. Any other suggestions?

You can look at the two log files which give information about the failure.

They are both in the C:\Windows folder and are named. setupapi.log and svcpack.log. Open in Notepad and seach for "Error" or "Access
is Denied"

A lot of the cases I see involve some change to the default user rights and permissions on files and the registry.

I suggest you follow the procedure below:

How To Reset Security Settings Back to the Defaults (313222)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;313222

Default Policy Research

1. Go to start, run, and type mmc
2. Go to file, add/remove snap-in, then click ADD. Choose Security configuration and analysis. Click Close then click OK.
3. Right-click security configuration and analysis and choose Open Database. Type a NEW NAME such as "default" and click OPEN. (this
creates a new database.)
4. "Import template" appears. choose "setup security.inf" and click OPEN.
5. Right-click on secruity configuration and click "Analyze computer now." You may also 'Configure" if desired. Note that for both options it
creates a log file and prompts you for the location of the log file.

Note: You have to choose "Configure" change and restore the defaults.

The Analysis highlights mismatches between the default security policy applied when you installed the PC compared to the current
policies.

If you right click any item that has a RED X and choose properites it will tell you what the default database setting was and what the
computer is now.

After restoring the default settings, try applying SP2 again.

I tried what you suggested and it did not work. The message I get is Generic
Host Process for Win32 needs to close. Failed to install catalog files.
Another idea? I am puzzled since I have installed SP2 on three other
machines that are bulit exactly like this one with no problem at all.

Take a look at the following articles:

Failed To Install Product Catalog Error Message When You Install Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;823303

The process is also described in the following article:

Error messages appear during upgrade from Windows Me or Windows 98 to Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307153

Basically you should rename the c:\windows\\System32\Catroot2 before running the SP2

Rename WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot folder to CatBAK.
Rename WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2 folder to CatBAK2 (if applicable)

You may have to do this from Safe Mode or even the Recovery Console.

Also disable any antivirus programs before running XPSP2.

Try the service pack again.
