trouble connecting to ISP

I have been helping a friend that has been having problem
with his XP system. When he attempts to connect (using US
Robotics 56k modem it slows down, gives out tones I have
never heard before. Then before it logs on to the net it
comes back with an error "6" and refuses to log on. Does
anyone know what an error "6" is in windows?

Any and all help would be very much appreciated!!

Hi,

Test the modem. Go to
start/programs/accessories/communications/hyperterminal. Answer no to the
telnet question, then cancel out of prompt to make a new connection. Click
help/help topics, expand hyperterminal/how to/test a modem using
hyperterminal. Run the recommended commands and tests.
