My partner is on xp home like myself, we have them networked via a ethernet
cable and a router. Two nights ago i installed some software for my palm on
my pc, when i'd finished i switched my pc off and went to bed. The next
morning my partners pc was able to connect to the internet but i couldn't. He
managed to repair this. Then yesterday morning he found his apache server was
haveing problems, so late evening he scanned for viruses ect and went to bed,
soon after the scanner said that he had 3 different files which were infected
at least. It deleted them, when it was finished it had said it needed to be
rebooted. I did this and when it came back on it couldn't connect to anything
or even attempt it, the internet explorere was just flickering and clicking
but wouldn't go anywhere. His apache, Mysql, and other programs were
unobtainable. He has been trying to sort it since 6am. But has not been able
to solve this despite reinstalling apache and mysql with newest updates, this
has got us both baffled. His pc is the main pc, yet i have been able to
access the internet at all times.

Sharryn,

After removal of viruses and other malware, LSP / Winsock corruption is
frequently experienced. Some malware builds itself into the LSP / Winsock, and
its removal can cause corruption.

If XP SP2, Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh winsock reset catalog" into the
command window.

Give LSP-Fix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>, WinsockFix
<http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257>, or WinsockXPFix
<http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html> a shot.

If no help yet, reset TCP/IP.

Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh int ip reset c:\netsh.txt" into the command
window.

Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

To protect your Win2000/WinXP you should patch or install new fixes to
any trojan infection. Install the newer service pack and read the
www.microsoft.com/windowsxp page to read about bulletins. For example,
for XP read about WindowsXP-KB890175-x86 for january 2005.
The fixes must be applicated in adition to the updated antivirus.
