trojan hell

My mate asked me if i could have a look at her computer as she thought it had
a virus on it.we found 8 trojans and over 200 infections. She is running
Xp home ed,version 2002,svp3.
She was told that the antivirus that was loaded onto her comp would last for
12 months but there was none on there.
There is no add/remove programs in the control panel, can't access the
display or help just to name a few.
I have ran malwarebytes but as with most of the programs it stops responding
and we can't contain the infections.
i Have installed avast but it will not put the infections in the chest
because of a number of system32 invalid responses.
One trojan is PSGaurd_desktop_hijacker,another had a name of PopCap.what
should she do

She should erase her hard disk and start from scratch. When a computer
is that severely compromised, there's nothing you can do about it.

She should also invest the time needed to learn how to protect her
computer. The internet is no place for the naive.

If it was mine, I would flatten it and start again. Making sure I had all
the relevant disk and serial numbers etc.

But as it's not, you may wish to post to the security/viruses newsgroup:

Install these 2 Programs. Do all the work in Safemode with Networking, if
necessary.

Also, update Avast, and rescan in SAfe Mode, or Safe Mode with Networking,
with it.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Malwarebytes is as the name says, a Malware Remover!
For the Free version scroll down their page to either download from
Download.com, or Major Geeks.com

Download, install, and update.

Important re: Safe Mode
If you happen to find a problem that you can’t uninstall / delete, reboot
the computer, and go into Safe Mode.
To get into Safe mode, tap F8 right at Power On / Startup, and use UP arrow
key to get to Safe Mode from list of options, then hit ENTER.
RESCAN your computer with your Anti-Virus, Malwarebytes and Spybot S & D
while in Safe Mode.

If unable to install above Programs in Normal Mode:
Sometimes Trojans, Viruses, Malware, etc stop you installing and/or updating
Programs to remove them.
If that happens, reboot into Safe Mode with Networking (from F8 list of
Startup Options), and install, update and scan from there.

Run anti-virus and anti-spyware software in safe mode.

I suggest you download and run Spybot S & D (freeware version). There
is a freeware version buried in this link:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html

The number of infestations is not the problem. The problem is whether
when you remove them do they return because can indicate an undetected
problem.

You also need to turn off System Restore until the machine is clean.

Hope this helps.

I would not even try. With that many on the system I would reformat and then clean
re-install the OS

Although many people think of malware as something to get rid of after
getting infected, that thought is exactly backwards. What you need to
do is *prevent* infection in the first place. Malware can cause
serious damage to your installation, making it nearly impossible to
correct the problems after the fact. Since she has so many infections,
it sounds like she is in that situation, and what she very likely
needs to do is to reformat and reinstall Windows from scratch.

I installed malwarebytes when i took my first look at it as she had no
malware removers on her comp but it would stop responding part of the way
through the check.I also installed Avast and updated that as well.We have no
problems installing programs but we cant remove anything because the
add/remove programs has disappeared.I will give spy bot a go.thanks

Kirsty, try doing all the work; install those Programs, update and scan in
Safe Mode with Networking.

Tap F8 at startup, and go into it from the list of Startup Options

Set Avast! to do a boot scan.

My answer to the above line which you posted is below.

AGAIN. Reformat the computer. Too far gone to get it back to working order.
