Terry Pinnell

I'm no virus or NAV expert so hope someone can give me some practical
advice please. I just got message

Go to http://www.symantec.com/search/ and enter the trojan virus name into
the search box. Might be an idea to tick the trojan box to limit the search.
It should give you instructions on manually correcting the problem.

Hope this helps.

Terry:
I had a variant of this virus infect me. I quarantined
it. Used Spybot to isolate the file name. Searched for
the exact file name and deleted it. The trojan I had
hijacked my browser.

All is well now although I now have a problem downloading
thumbnail images/pictures. I don't know if this is a IE
problem or my firwall? HTML or Jpeg? Do you think you can
point me in the right direction?

Regards.
Tony.

Norton AntiVirus has detected a virus on your computer.
Object Name: C:\WINDOWS\70000041.exe
Virus Name: Downloader.Trojan
Action Taken: Unable to repair this file.
-------

What is this and how should I proceed please? (I have NAV as part of
SystemWorks 2002, and I'm a subscriber with regular updates via
Symantec LiveUpdate).

Anthony,
What do you mean by you cannot download pictures?

See if this is the problem

Save Target As and Print Target Commands Are Unavailable

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=176316

If a case of cannot save as jpg, then this is a common problem that is
usually cleared by deleting the Temporary Internet Files via
IE-Tools-Internet Options and select the Delete Files button in the
Temporary Internet area of the General Tab.

There is also the broken Active-X file cause. For broken Active-X or other
damaged file:

Hope this helps.

Thanks Martin. I found the Symantec page:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/download.trojan.html
but it says a LiveUpdate was issued in 2001 and it is 'Easy' to
repair. Any idea why NAV could not therefore fix it automatically?

Also searched HD and deleted both references to it. But I see the
repair description actually recommends a more rigorous approach,
including disabling XP System Restore and restarting in Safe mode,
then running full NAV check again. (I do that overnight Fri/Sat
usually; with 650,000 files it take a while!)

I think the reason it states to disable the system restore is to ensure that
you do not keep a store point which still has the trojan within it. In this
way, any changes you make will not contain it.

Good luck
Martin
