TRAP message on bootup, bootup fails

Rob Rietschel

I am trying to boot up my Windows 2000 Server and I get
the following message:

TRAP 00000002 exception TR=0028 cr0=0000000011,
cr2=00000000, cr3=000300000 GDT limit=03ff base=00036000
idt limit=07ff base=00036400 CS:eip=0008:00306F79
ss:esp=0010:00060CD8 errcode=0000 flags=000000087 cy nozr
intdis down trapdis eax=00000185 ebx000031094 ecx=000316A8
ds=0010 es=0010 edi=5FFFA000 exi=00000FFF ebp=00060CE4
cr0=80000011 fs=0030 gs=0000

And I cannot move past this. WHen I try to boot from the
Windows 2000 Server CD, it gets to the "Setup is checking
your hard drive...." and then the TRAP message returns,
same with the Boot Floppies.

The knowledge base has a similar error message and it
suggests going into recovery mode and replacing the NTLDR
file with a new one off the CD, but I cannot get passed
the trap.

Anysuggestions on how I can get into the system to replace
the file or what the trap message might mean aside from
the NTLDR file being corrupt?

Thanks,
Rob

There are two ways to get at your hard disk:

a) Comand Console
- Boot with your Win2000 CD
- Select "Repair" when prompted
- Select "Command Console" when prompted
- Enter the Administrator's password
- Replace c:\ntldr

b) Temporarily install the disk as a slave disk
in some other Win2000 machine, then replace
the file.
