This usually indicates bad RAM, not a software (Windows) issue. Do a RAM
test. I like Memtest86+ from www.memtest.org. Obviously, you will have
to get this and make the bootable media from a working computer with an
Internet connection, a cd burner and third-party burning software (if
you want the bootable cd). Download either the .iso for the bootable cd
or the precompiled Windows binary for the bootable floppy. Make the
bootable media and then take it to the sick machine and boot with it.
The test will run immediately. If you get errors, replace the RAM.

Sometimes the RAM is not bad and the motherboard is, so if this is
fairly new RAM you might want to test it in another machine. If the RAM
tests fine in another machine, it is either incompatible with the
original motherboard (obviously not if it was working until now, just
if it is RAM you've recently put in) or the motherboard itself is bad.

I'm working on a customer's PC that has the same problem. Not MB, CPU, Memory
or any other hardware. Can connect to different drive and do full install of
XP Pro without error... The error suggests hardware since its not getting to
the point of loading any OS specific files or drivers. Have seen this error
with a defective boot sector on the drive or bad buffer memory on a drive.
