I'm new to Front Page and am trying to make the background of a photograph transparent. In other words, I want to use a picture of someone, but don't want any background, just the background to the web page itself. How do I do that?

You have to use a image editing program...Photoshop, Ulead, etc.

JPGs cannot be transparent. Only GIFs can be transparent. The problem is,
GIFs only support 256 colors max. You can use an image editor to change the
format, but expect the quality to drop, and possibly the image file size to
grow, if you do.

My favorite: Photoshop Elements. Does almost everything full Photoshop does
but for about $500+ less. Gotta love that!

I didn't say it would be easy :-)

To drop the background is hard enough, to make the remainder transparent would depend entirely on what the picture is...generally a photo does not lend itself to becoming a .gif...but who knows...if you stylize it enough maybe she'd end up with something usable.

Hi Bev,
as Kevin said you can't get a good quality photo with a transparent
background, you'll be limited to 256 colours which isnt really enough for a
nice photograph.

How about making the background colour of the photo the same as the colour
of your page - this way the background would look transparent.

Photoshop is like belonging to a gym...you pay your money spend a year or two learning it... you'd feel a tad guilty if you didn't actually use it :-)

Exactly. Photoshop Elements is more like buying a jumprope and a jogging
suit. ;-)

You change it to a gif and then use fp to make the background transparent.
If you checked the help file you would see how to do this....

It is VERY easy to do.

The problem remains that most realistic photos will not translate well to a .gif.

Bev should post a URL then we could tell if it's do-able.

Jon's suggestions about making the photo background a color that is used in the cell/table/bground might be the only solution - depending on the quality of the photo.

In any case it's a job for an image editor, don't think FP can handle that on it's own.

Hi Bev,
I've read all the posts below and think that while they're all "right" in
one way or another ;-)
you may want to think about why you want transparency.
there are a bunch of "fake" transparent here:
http://kimberlyssoups.com which I did more than a year ago. all the
graphics are made from photos I shot in my office and none of them are
really transparent. it's just an illusion.
if you like you can contact me at http://nedp.net/contact and I'll try to
help.
