Recently updated to XP, I used to use a program called 'Deskcolor' which you
could set the background of the text on the desktop icons to
clear/transparent.Would have thought this would be an option in XP but cant
see it. Is there a way to set this or will i have to use Deskcolor?

Right-click on your desktop and select:

Properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web (tab)
and uncheck "Lock Desktop Items", click OK and APPLY.

Also, check this setting:

Right-click MY COMPUTER and select:
Properties > Advanced > Performance settings >
Visual Effects, place a check next to "Use Drop Shadows
for Icon Labels on the Desktop", then click "apply".
