Translating to Japanese

Hi Everyone,

We have this Excel application that needs to be translated into
Japanese and I have not got a clue where to start. Does anyone have
any experience of using such a character set and what is involved in
doing translations like this.

The majority of the translation will be performed on text in Cells on
worksheets but some text also exists in:

- vba code (message Boxes etc.)
- Forms
- word objects

Any help or pointers are greatly appreciated. If you have personal
experience of doing this then I would be interested to hear how much of
pain this was?

I have experience with translating Japanese and using the character set, but
not so much with translating any VBA components.

I can tell you that the entry system for Japanese is completely different.
Am I correct in understanding that you have someone who can do the actual
translation and that your question is about entering the text into Excel?

You need to consider the entry process - Japanese keyboard feature on your
computer. Should be able to add it without a problem however.
Also need to choose a font that is common so that end users will not have to
subsiture a different font which could create formatting issues.

Maybe the best way to answer your question is to say, my wife and I have a
translation business and have done many types of documents, I am also quiet
compter litterate, but the combination sounds a little intimidating to me.
You might do well to look at breaking it into two steps. Get the text
translated. Then find someone with the ability to make adjustments in the
application itself.

Scott,

Sorry for the delay (the christmas period got the better of me). We do
have a translator and will be breaking it down into two steps:

1/ The translation of the text (FYI - this is a questionnaire type app
with the questions listed in the worksheets)

2/ Implementing the translation into the existing format.

For your point about the font choice. So you are saying that even
though the text would be in a different character set (japanese), you
can change the font of the character set as well (eg verdana, arial
etc).

What is the best font to use?

We are also looking for a spanish (argentinian) translator who can help
us to so let me know if you can help.

Ok, first of all, I'm not a computer-smart so some of the words you guys were using went over my head but if you wanted to know how to type Japanese character in any office programs, it's not too hard. I use WindowsXP and ME(American version) and Office 2000 and XP(American version) and added Japanese in Control Panel\Regional options\Input Locals\Add\Japanese. I do not use any special Japanese keyboard and it'd let me key "kanji", "hiragana", and "katakana" with no problem. One thing though, the Japanese only came with only 2 font options "MS Mincho" and the other I can't remember the name of it right now.

oh, yes, after you do the above, Right click "EN" icon on taskbar\Language Bar\Change EN to JP\Input Mode\then I usually chose "hiragana"
