Transferring Windows XP to another computer

My problem is that I just bought a copy of Windows XP Home for
an older computer in January 2004. We had two computers; one
a new Dell Pentium 4 and the other was an old Pentium model
that was in my daughter's room.

We had Windows XP on the Dell; I bought a copy of Windows XP
specifically for the older computer so that I could network our home
and share a DSL connection.

The old computer has died (motherboard). It was a Pentium I and not
worth having repaired. We have thrown it out
(literally put it in the trash today). I really don't want to sink a
lot of money into a new machine for my daughter right now.
If I buy a refurbished machine that has no operating system on it, is it legal to use the Windows XP software on that machine? How do I go about doing that? If I have to call someone, that's okay. I just cannot afford to buy another copy of Windows XP right now.

Thanks for your help.

Hello
Is your Windows XP a retail or OEM version?
Retail versions you can transfer to any computer at any time as long as it
is only installed on one machine at a time unless you purchase another
license (key code).
OEM versions are tied to the original machine it was installed on.

Is it an Upgrade or Full version?
Full versions can be installed on any machine that meet the requirements.
Upgrade versions will require a copy of a qualifying OS either installed on
the computer or you can do a clean install as long as you have a qualifying
OS cd.

Assuming retail licenses (OEM licenses are not transferable),
simply remove WinXP and Office from the computer they are currently
on, and install them onto the new one. If it's been more than 120
days since you last activated that specific Product Key, you'll most
likely be able to activate via the Internet without problem. If it's
been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:
