Transferring files slowed way down after installing IE6

I have two Win2k (Professional) machines, one Win98 machine, and two
Macs networked. One of the Win2k machines was extremely slow in
transferring files to the Macs. I decided to use Ethereal to try to figure out
what was going on. I installed it on the "slow" Win2k machine and captured
some information. When I tried to install Ethereal on the "fast" Win2k
machine, it required me to upgrade Internet Explorer from v5 to v6. After
doing that, the previously fast machine also started transferring files slowly
not only to the Macs, but to the other Win2k machine as well.

So after installing IE6, the two Win2k machines transfer files slowly to each
other (a 22Mb file takes 6 minutes), but quickly to the Win98 machine (a
22Mb file takes 30 seconds). The Macs and Win98 machine all transfer files
quickly between each other.

Any insights on network settings in Win2k will be greatly appreciated.

1st. Name Resolution. Win2k uses DNS and Win9x uses WINS. (And MACS, I
believe want to use DNS as well, although don't quote me). Unless you have
both a primary DNS and WINS setup for "Your Network" (not your ISPs DNS)
some of the machines are going to run slow as they search "Your Network" for
the info they need.
I would assume that you do not have a DNS server on "Your Network" and the
Win2k machines are querying your ISPs DNS for your local network info. But
of course your ISP has no such information.
You may want to check out HOSTS or LMHOSTS as an option.

2nd. Is an issue with the default set of protocols. By default Win9x loads
NetBuie & SPX (which you do not need unless you have a UNIX server on "Your
Network"), remove SPX from all machines. ( Or Wait, add SPX to the Win2K if
that is what the MACs use).
In any case make sure all machines have the same Protocol set.

But it is best to share it with the group.
