Transfering Files and Settings

I want to transfer files and settings from an old W98 OEM machine to a
new Windows XP machine. The new machine has no floppy drive so I
am using an XP cd on the old machine to try and collect files. The
old machine sees the new machine and I have created a folder on the
new machine to hold the collected data.
After starting the wizard on the old machine it freezes with the
message 'Please wait while the wizard prepares for the next step'.
What's wrong?

The 'Please wait while the wizard prepares for the next step' appears a the first step: is this where you are getting held up?

It's hard to comment as to the exact problem without any error message. Just how long was it 'stuck' before you decided to cancel the process.

It is a slow process when run from an older, slower 98 system.

You could check to see that the free space on the hard drive is greater than 2 times that of the total volume of your data in all applications and your email files.

Make sure you delete all temporary internet files, run a disk defrag and even a scan disk to make sure that the hard disk is in good shape.

After this then make a fresh floppy disk on the XP machine and run the Wizard again: be patient as it can take quite a while for the file to be created. Once it has been created [onto the hard drive of the 98 machine or even if you can, using the network cable, onto the new XP machine] you can copy that onto CD for extra security. From my experience it can fail all too easily when using network drive and it is always quicker when writing this file to a local hard drive than the network drive.

This problem was solved by moving the hard drive to another computer
and rerunning F.A.S.T.. I had previously tried new memory and all the
standard maintenance programs to no avail.
