wrong version file transfer

my hard drive was failing and I used the file transfer wizard to save the
setings I needed for a new machine but on the new machine using the XP file
transfer wizard and looking at the location on the network where I saved the
files I get an error message that the files were gathered by an earlier
version and to rerun it but this is impossible since the orginal hard drive
did fail. What can I do to recover the data that has been saved.
