Track changes

I added a document to our internat web site after it had been changed. I had
not accepted all changes, which corrected the problem. My question is, why
could some people (my bosses) see the changes when they viewed the document
from the web, but when I looked at it I did not see any changes?

This has also happened when a document was sent to a large distribution.
Some people saw the changes others did not.

If the setting “Make hidden markup visible when opening or saving†in Tools >
Options > Security tab is turned on (which it is by default), any tracked
changes found in a document will be shown when you open the document (“Final
Showing Markup†view).

To change this, each user must turn off that setting. However, if users turn
off the setting, they risk distributing documents with tracked changes
without being aware of it.

If you need the changes later, you could save a copy of the document, accept
all changes in the copy and publish/distribute the “clean†copy.

I don't think that answered my question. This document was created and
reviewed by several people. I made the final changes (without accepting all
changes) and posted it to the web. When I view it I do not see any change
marks. My boss does see changes. I just checked our settings. My pc has
“Make hidden markup visible when opening or saving†checked, his pc did not.
Does that explain why each of us viewed the document differently?

If you are sure you are opening exactly the same file, I don't think I am
able to find out what happens there. You and your boss' settings should
rather have been the other way around to match what you see.

I don’t think I am able to help you with an explanation but my guess is that
it has something to do with Word being opened from within a browser – there
may be some setting in the browser that makes the difference but
unfortunately I don't know of any obvious setting to suspect.

I just made an experiment:
I created a Word document with tracked changes and uploaded it to my
Website. I experienced the following:

If I save and upload the document with “Final†selected (hidden tracked
changes), _no_ track changes are shown when opening the document from the
Website regardless of whether “Make hidden markup visible when opening or
saving†is on or off.

If I save and upload the document with “Final Showing Markup†selected
(visible tracked changes), track changes _are_ shown when opening the
document from the Website regardless of whether “Make hidden markup visible
when opening or saving†is on or off.

So it seems as if “Make hidden markup visible when opening or saving†has no
influence unless documents are opened directly from Word. In that case, the
description in my first post applies.

Punkster, I think she did answer it. Your boss and the others who see the
changes DO have the “Make hidden markup visible when opening or saving†bpc
checked in Tools > Options > Security, so they see the changes. You do not
have it checked so you do not.

As a safety measure in the future also check the box for " “Warn before
printing, saving or sending a file that contains traked changes or commentsâ€
in Tools >
