track changes not working

I have a document that already has two sets of changes from previous
reviewers and am trying to add my changes. No changes are notated, in fact,
it is acting as a normal doc, deleting, etc without marking the change. I
have accepted changes, final showing markup, original showing markup, but
nothing seems to work

How do I make this work?

You must turn on Track Changes. Either select Tools > Track Changes or
double-click the TRK button in the status bar at the bottom of the window.
Track Changes is turned off when the TRK button is dimmed.
