Total frustration with IE6, XP SP2, and wanted pop-ups

Guest

From a previous post here, I've looked over several web sites offering
helpful hints on getting pop-ups to work under XP SP2 in IE6 but all to no
avail. I'm here again to plead with anyone out there that can help me.

1. I've turned off pop-up blocker in IE.
2. I've added the sites that have pop-ups that I want to my trusted sites.
3. I've registered several DLLs
4. I've enabled several settings under Internet Options - Security - Internet
5. I don't have any pop-up blocking software.

I'd prefer good recommendations or a request to know what's on my PC and NO
responses where a list of several web sites is provided (PA Bear)!

The above issue can occur if you have not enabled Activex scripts or jave
scripts. Try the following and see if it helps:

Try enabling the scripts in IE by following the steps given below:

1.Open IE and click Tools and select Internet Options.
2.Click Security and click Custom level.
3.Scroll down the tab and enable all the options under "Activex control
and plugins".
4.Also enable the options under "Java VM" in the scroll list.
5.Click Ok.

or.........

For best security set Active X settings to:

My settings are for Active X are:

Also, check the information below, it is too extensive to insert in this

You can check the following concerning ActiveX components trying to reach
defunct servers. If these particular ones don't show up, check for any
other anomalous entries:

Take a look in %SYSTEMDRIVE%\%SystemRoot%\Downloaded Program Files (these
are ActiveX components), and see if you have something there called Tracker
Class. If so, right click and click Remove (don't just delete it). This is
a hi-jack program that's trying to reach a server that's no longer working,
so it hangs up.

There are some others that are similar in effect also, so if you don't have
Tracker Class, right click on each thing in this folder then select
Properties. The Codebase line will often give you a clue as to where
something came from. If it looks like it might not belong, try Remove.
Things like Sun Java Runtimes and Macromedia stuff like Shockwave or Apple
Quicktime are normal, so use some judgment about what you eliminate. Mostly
you'll be asked to re-download them if you Remove something that's actually
needed.

Also check in Add-Remove Programs for Surfchoice 1.1 and remove it. It is
also tracker software to a defunct server.

Additional important information about removing ActiveX controls is in the
following Microsoft articles:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q240797
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q154850

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

The problem seems to be that even when the main URL group is added to
Trusted Sites, the popup URL is something different and is blocked. The
only solution I've found is when clicking on a log-in link, for example,
holding down the control key seems to work.

Also, using a wildcard in the trusted URL helps: https://www.mybank.com
is OK for the main window, but https://www.mybank.com/* helps with the
general case.

Jan, I looked through almost every web site listed in this thread and applied
many solutions but I still have the same issue, I can't get pop-ups to appear
when I want them to. Any other suggestions?

You might try renaming the hosts file. There may be something in your HOST
file that is blocking these pop-ups and preventing them from being loaded.

It may, however, be Shockwave Flash related, try the following:

This is totally frustrating! :) I've gone through some more suggestions,
verified that my java script is working fine, and everything else but still
nothing works right. The closest so far is when I click on a link for one
site, I do see a window appear but disappear quickly. I was thinking of
uninstalling SP2 but I can't find it in Add/REmove Programs; am I going to
have to reformat my drive and install from scratch?

Jan,

I reinstalled XP but still a no go and I have no option to uninstall SP 2.
What I did was slipstream SP2 into XP Home and place the resulting mix on a
seperate CD; I guess this method makes SP2 and integral part of XP. So, any
other ideas?

Ok...perhaps you might try the following...it's a bit of a long shot, but,
right now it is the only thing that comes to mind....

You stated in another message in this thread that you have disabled the
popup blocker in IE, but....not in SP2.

The popup blocker that is installed with SP2 is simple to turn on and off.
It reportedly shows up down in the status bar of IE, and a simple right
click should give you the option to enable/disable the blocker. One nice
feature is that you can enable/disable popups for certain sites rather than
just arbitrarily enable or disable them for all sites.

Also see:
Internet Explorer Popup Manager
http://msdn.microsoft.com/security/productinfo/XPSP2/securebrowsing/popupmanager.aspx

and .........

XP SP2 also enables a 'lock down' mode which is by far seems the most
frustrating feature of SP2. It causes lots of errors on certain web pages
referencing ActiveX settings regardless of the fact that you have ActiveX
enabled.

I don't have any information on how to resolve this, other than what I have
already provided. I'm sure there is a workaround, but, I have not heard of
any yet. Perhaps someone else here has further information on this
possibility.

Hope this helps

DSO ExploitI guess what I should have said about the pop-up blocker is where
I disable it. In IE, I go to Tools - Internet Options - Privacy - and turn
off Pop-up blocker. I'm not aware of any of pop-up blocker for IE or SP2.
I've also tried turning off the firewall but no go. I ran three ad/spyware
tools: Ad-aware, Spy Sweeper, and Spybot. Spybot did catch an attempt to
modify IE a day back but I hot the OK button to quickly to notice what was
being modified. I just ran Spybot and the only thing it always reports back
is:

Hi Auutumn :)

My apologies for not getting back to you sooner. Thank you for the
additional information, it does help, by letting us know what you have tried
already. :)

'k...here is some information on this, this the following and see if it
helps:

DSOstop2 (new version 3/21/02)

The "DSO Exploit" (Data Source Object) was first reported by GreyMagic
Software of Israel on February 27, 2002 and a "workaround" for Microsoft's
defective code was provided by Axel Pettinger and Garland Hopkins on March
3, 2002. Their fix requires the user to manually edit the registry. Many
computer users are extremely nervous (and justifiably so) about doing this,
owing to years of warnings and advisories not to. This FREE utility will
safely do it for those who do not feel confident running and editing
"Regedit." Read the details for more information and links to the registry
modification instructions and test site.

Take a look here for more information and to download the registry utility
and instructions to take care of the registry changes needed to correct this
problem:

To disable the SP2 popup blocker:

The popup blocker that is installed with SP2 is simple to turn on and off
and is turned on by default. It shows up down in the status bar of IE and a
simple right click gives you the option to enable/disable the blocker. One
nice feature is that you can enable/disable popups for certain sites rather
than just arbitrarily enable or disable them for all sites. See:

with the details and any error messages.
