Toolkit to Temporarily Block Delivery of Windows XP SP2: NOT WORKING

S

Stephan Golux

As per an MVP suggestion in an earlier thread in this newsgroup, I have
downloaded and installed this software to stop my computer continually
trying to upgrade to SP2. Software is at:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BA-EA5D-4425-89C1-C1CB1CCD463C&displaylang=en

and

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/sp2aumng.mspx

Problem is that it doesn't seem to work. I have confirmed that my
registry was changed as per the FAQs on the microsoft web page.

I do indeed have the new registry key in place, namely:

HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate

The "Default" value is not set.

The "DoNotAllowXPSP2" value, a REG_DWORD, is set to 1.

However, even after rebooting the system, Windows Update hounds me to
download and install SP2. Anyone out there have any ideas?

Many thanks...

When you open:
HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate

in regedt32, is the Edit menu, Permissions item set to allow System and you
on that and all child objects? Your child object 'WindowsUpdate' may have
inheireted some restriction from something above it.

Hi Mark -

You are a little beyond me in my abilities and understanding. I have
never looked at this kind of "Permissions" thing before, but I have done
what you asked. First off, I am using "Regedit", not "Regedt32", unless
they are the same thing. Then, when I open
HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate and look at
Edit->Permissions, I get a dialog box that shows several different
"Group or user names". There are five. In the control below the group
and user names is a list showing "Full Control", Read" and "Special
Permissions". I'll show you a grid showing how these are allocated:

GROUP OR USER FULL CONTROL READ SPECIAL
Administrator ALLOW ALLOW NOTHING
CREATOR OWNER NOTHING NOTHING ALLOW
Me (Stephan) NOTHING NOTHING ALLOW
SYSTEM ALLOW ALLOW NOTHING
Users NOTHING ALLOW NOTHING

Does this tell you anything? I am a bit out of my depth.

Thanks again.
