XP SP2 will not deploy via Group Policy

In preparation for a rollout of SP2 I've been preparing to install it via
group policy, following the article:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/deploy/gpdepsp2.mspx

I am familiar with group policy and software deployment (we have over 20
applications deployed this way on our network), and have deployed SP1 for
Windows XP this way in the past.

On our test machine, the SP2 installation starts but fails with an error 102
in the application event log:
"The install of application Windows XP Service Pack 2 (1033) from policy
Deploy XP SP2 failed. The error was : The installation source for this
product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can
access it. "

I can't find anything on this on the knowledgebase, google or Dell's support
site. I've been in contact with Microsoft's SP2 support team, they have no
ideas either.

Has anyone out there sucessfully deployed SP2 using group policy, or does
anyone have any suggestions as to what I might want to test?

As to your error, did you copy the IT download or the SP2 CD
to a folder that was on your primary machine's hard drive
that was available to the install program?

Well ahead of you on all those I'm afraid. I've read the enterprise guide
to deployment, and followed the group policy deployment guide to the letter
when doing this.

I downloaded the IT install of SP2 and extracted it to a folder on our
server.

I phoned SP2 support last week, they have no ideas so far...

Wild guess.
If you are running W2k3 server(s) to hold your distribution share, remember
the default share permissions these days are no longer Everyone full control
but Everyone READ. Don't know this from experience, but I could imagine the
SP install temporarily wants to store something in the share it relies on
later in the process, which in this case it would not be able to.
And, another thought, the Computer accounts that need to install the SP2
have been granted access permissions to the share??

Like I said, wild guesses, (if you followed everything else to the letter)

If you find out, let us know and educate us. :))

Nope, it's a W2k server I'm afraid, and one I've been using to distribute
applications from for some time (including SP1...).

The write access is a good idea. I hope to god that's not the case (I
really do not want to be granting all authenticated users modify access to
the SP2 folder), but it's definately a possibility.

It'll be a week or two now before I get around to trying that. I'm on
holiday next week and other projects are taking priority now. I phoned MS
product support about this, and their SP2 team. They have no idea and
although technical support is free for SP2 issues, apparently that does not
include deploying it via group policy. I get no support from Microsoft for
this without paying £200 for the privilage.

For the time being, I've decided to live without SP2.
