There is a certain area just below the toolbars (typically). To me it looks
like a tool bar, but it's not manageable like a tool bar. I can't get rid of
it, although I've never used anything on it.

It has a back button, a forward button, the name of the currently selected
folder (redundant), an address bar, a go button, a stop button, and a
refresh button.

Sounds like the Web toolbar. Right-click the toolbars area and if that
toolbar is checked...uncheck it.

Thanks, but that's not the one. I can turn that one off and on. This one is
directly above the two main viewing areas: the folder list and the message
list. I don't think it a toolbar.

Viwe | Toolbars - turn them all off and then describe what you still
see )if anything).

Do you have any add-in software running?

Thanks. Turning off all toolbars, I'm left with the menu bar and this other
bar. No add-ins that I know of. I guess I should know if I have add-ins, but
is there some way I can be sure.

I don't think it's a toolbar, as it has no handle for moving it around.

Left to right, it has a back button, a forward button, the name of the
currently
selected folder in large white font with small icon in front, an address
bar, a go button, a stop button, and a refresh button. It has a dark gray
background. It has a handle in front of the address bar so I can size the
address bar (left-right). It is the full width of the outlook window, even
when I resize. It is situated directly above the folder list and the message
list.

The contents of the address bar are typically outlook:inbox. I can type a
URL in this address bar and cause a web page to appear instead of the
message list. (right side). The folder list (left side) stays open. When I
do that, the name of the currently selected folder (large white font)
changes to the name of the displayed web page and the stop button and
refresh button become enabled. The back button takes me back to the message
list.

Outlook 2002.

AFAIK you can't hide that one but you can hide some of its components. While
viewing the Inbox, r-click on the left side of the Address label until double
arrows appear and then drag it to the right until it stops. It should stay there
for all folder views except Outlook Today.

What version of Outlook are you using? If you go to Tools | Options | Other
| Advanced you can check the Add-ins (and COM Add-ins) lists and see if
there's anything there.

Nothing there under COM Add-ins. Outlook 2002 is the version. Sorry to waste
so much of everyone's time on something so trivial. It's just so typical, I
just assumed there's a setting that I can't find.

Snarky Parker has already said that he recognizes the bar I'm talking about,
and it can't be removed.

Thanks for your time.

Thanks, I still can't use that space, but at least it solves the mystery, ..
except what is AFAIK?
