too many user accounts

Hi

I've just spotted that another user account has appeared in my name in
C:Documents and Settings. I didn't create this new account (I don't think).
The one I created is labelled with just my first name. The second mysterious
one has my first and last name listed. It doesn't appear in User Accounts in
Control Panel.

Does anyone know why this might have appeared and is it safe to delete it?

This is not a user account - it is a profile folder. It might, in fact, be
your current profile folder, and deleting it might be disastrous. Try
this to find out:
- Click Start / Run / cmd{OK}
- Type this command:
set user{Enter}
What user name do you see? What is your profile name?

Hi Pegasus

The name is the one I chose when setting up my account i.e. my first name
only.

Fine. You can do this to clean the air:
1. Reboot the machine.
2. Log on as Administrator.
3. Make a note of the mystery folder's name. Let's assume
it is MSmith.
4. Rename MSmith to MSmith.bad.
5. Log on as yourself.
6. Wait a week or two.
If all is well, delete MSmith.bad. If something is missing, reverse
Step 4.
