to convert audio files

What do I need to convert a wav file to an mp3 file.

Also, my digital recorder creates VM1 files. The recorder cam with a
Software product that plays these. But I want to send to freinds as Email
attachment.
Is there some common software that will support these files?

You need MP3 Workshop. ( The freeware one)

Coverts CD to MP3, CD to WAV, WAV to MP3, MP3 to WAV and more

Not the best choice, zero work has been done on it for almost four years.

But you have no alternative suggestion to offer apart from your negative
comment.
What a useful post, hope you feel it was worth it.

The product still works well here after all this time. Still freeware, too.

I was offering information for the OP. As for other encoding programs,
there are dozens some of which are regularly mentioned here. Numerous are
in my dandies (sig line). However, since you want specific ones, CDex is as
good as any and better than most.

That's the same one I had already provided in the OPs duplicate post which
is why I didn't mention it here.

Yep.

Yep, nothing exactly wrong with the program. It is not the best choice for
two reasons:
1. The LAME encoder included is quite old, newer versions are far
better. One can always replace the old one but it is highly unlikely that
the OP who doesn't know what an encoder is would know that. Or where to get
it or what to do with it.
2. Numerous people had problems with it messing up files when
transcoding MP3s (MP3 > MP3). Never did myself but I rarely used it for that
purpose.

It is a shame that the author lost his source code (the reason he stopped
working on it) as it was a well thought out program with several unique and
useful features including the ability to queue a series of jobs. Four years
ago I was touting MP3Workshop as _THE_ MP3 program. Can't do that anymore.
