sftware to convert WAV to MP3 and VM1 to MP3

What do I need to convert a wav file to an mp3 file.

Also, my digital recorder creates VM1 files. The recorder came with a
Software product that plays these and converts them to WAV files. But I
want to send to freinds as Email
attachment. The WAV files are too large.


Is there some common software that will support these files? That is if I
send the VM1 file to friends, what can tey use to play them.

You need an encoder, preferably LAME. One program using it is CDex
