Title Bar on IE shows garbage

Like Robert on 12/5/2004, my IE6 Title Bar suddenly went berserk today. (I
did download 2 MicroSoft security patches). Robert got "?????????4???????"
instead of a proper title on the dark blue box at the top of the IE window.
I get a whole line of little square boxes. How can I go back to getting myh
proper title of the web page I am on?

Hi,
Check for malware by running, at least, CWShredder and Ad-aware. See:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

This could also be caused by a legitimate program running in the background.
Disable ad-blockers, toolbars, other add-ons for IE, etc to see if one of
them is causing this. Take a look at any program which might be interacting
with IE.

I've got the exact same thing happening too and have looked for weeks for a
solution. I've run Microsoft AntiSpyware, AdAware and Spybot but all claim
that I'm spyware free.

Something interesting to note however. I'm on XP Pro and have two users.
It's only my username which exhibits this problem. The other user has a
normal titlebar. I'll keep looking for a solution. Worst case scenario would
be to create a brand new user and move my data files over. I'd rather it
didn't come to that but it beats reinstalling the OS.

Robert,

I believe I have a solution. Are you running Google Desktop Search? Probably
so. Here's what I did to return my IE6 title bar back to normal:

- Launch IE6
- Tools > Manage Add-ons...
- Look for a item named "IeCaptureBho Object"
- Select it and then click "Disable"
- Close all browser windows and relaunch IE6
- Your title bar should be returned to normal

At least in my case, on my home computer making this change fixed IE6's tool
bar. It should be noted that I'm also running Google Desktop Search on my
office computer. This component is enabled and I'm NOT having a problem
there.

I don't know exactly what this component does but I've contacted Google and
am awaiting a reply.

Regards,

I have (had) the same problem with the squares until a minute ago. I don't
have the "IeCaptureBhoObject" line, but instead have a "Stopzilla Browse
helper." On a hunch I disabled that and sure enough got my title bar back!
There's got to be a way to lock other programs from doing that. It was
driving me crazy for weeks. Thanks for the help, Michael.

I seem to have come across a related problem. My title bar gives the correct
current URL but then has the name of the isp that I used to be with as in
"....Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by Freeserve..." In fact I am not
with Freeserve any more. I have looked in Tools/Manage Add ins, but there is
no Freeserve tool bar or anything in there. I have removed the Wanadoo search
bar and everything I can think of to do with Wanadoo. I have cleared all my
temporary Internet files in case it was in there. Do you know where this
piece of info lurks???!

I don't see that it is related and a new post may have been better
but....

How to Change the Internet Explorer Window Title

or

How to remove branding.
To remove all Internet Explorer branding, follow these steps:
1. Click Start.
2. Click Run.
3. Type

rundll32.exe iedkcs32.dll,Clear

and then click OK.

4. Restart Internet Explorer.

view point toolbar caused the problem

This may not be related.

But when I DISABLED the add-on "viewpoint toolbar"
(bizarre - when can it not be removed?)

Then the garbage in the Internet Explorer title bar went back to normal text.
