Timing custom animation without advancing a slide

I've been developing a series of presentations to train residents in the ICU
using powerpoint. Each slide is narrated and with elements timed to fade in
with accompanying comments.
I'm trying to allow this aspect of timing but would rather have the slide
advance manually so Flash quizzes and diagrams can be presented.
Thanks in advance.

btw. This group has been a terrific resource to us in putting this project
together.

I believe what you are looking for is to fine tune the animation settings;
start time and duration in relation to other animations and the narration.
You need to show and use the Advanced Animation Timeline for finetuning the
animation settings (see tomorrow's post on The PowerPoint Blog for an
example and details). To time things to the narration is a fairly painful
process (something I seem to do on a weekly basis).

My process is to open the Animation Pane, turn on the Advanced Timeline and
expand the width of the animation pane (or moveo to a second monitor so it
can be even wider). The goal is to see all of the animations and the
timeline (in seconds) at the bottom. Click play to preview the animation and
here the narration. Note at what time each animation is to occur (watching
the timeline at the bottom while listening to the narration). Then slide
each animation to its start time. Repeat process and adjust until all is
good.
