Timeline audio distortion in movie maker and other video editors

I've been searching and reading posts for the past several days about
the timeline audio distortion problem many people have written about.

A year or more ago, the last time I tried to edit video, everything
worked fine. Something i installed or changed since then is likelly
causing the problem.

The problem is not confined to Movie Maker. A trial version of "Video
Edit Magic" has the identical audio problem on my system. This seems
to mean that the operating system has allowed a software installation
to replace files that at least two video editing programs rely on in
editing mode (timeline).

Maybe a solution for this has been posted somewhere and I've over
looked it. Someone suggested a method for reinstalling Movie Maker. I
tried this and was asked for an SP2 disk, which i don't have since SP2
was a download. There was another method offered to re register a dll
which also made no difference. I found a list of *.ax files that can
cause problems. I had one of them and renamed it without effect.

The Microsoft website does not acknowledge the problem exists. No
doubt the Microsoft Movie Maker team knows the problem, and the
solution, and has been told to let us turn in the wind.

Since the problem is not Move Maker's alone, purchasing an alternative
video editor does garrantee a solution.

If there's a proven solution I've overlooked, a heads up would be
appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Hi Charlie
I do have a section of my website devoted to this audio problem.
[Movie Maker -> Trouble Shooting -> Audio Glitches]
But if you are having the same problem with other editing software as well I
suspect an audio codec is at fault.
I have never tried this suggestion for an audio problem before but the
Windows XP Codec pack has video and audio codecs so it is worth a shot
downloading and installing it to see if the problem goes away.

the Problem Solving > Audio Issues page of my website is where I keep the
info I know about the issues and work-arounds.

yes, it's a real issue..... I wrestled with it last week as I was finishing
an audio track in Movie Maker, to use as the soundtrack for a Photo Story
being entered into a contest. In the end I had to submit it with a couple
little audio artifacts that started with splitting a clip.
