What do you use to open a .tiff file? I've tried most applications, and some
'trials' from Internet, and photo pgms, to no avail. Thanks!

If you have Office 2003 or 2007 you will have Microsoft Document Imaging,
but it will not have been installed by default.

BTW, irfanview did not work! I 'checked' for the association to be made
w/TIFF-TIF files, ran, it couldn't read file header; 'Unknown file format or
file not found' Arghh Will be back later. Many, many thanks. Apple(s) and
Oranges here eh? (Personal comment - we w/MS seem to be the ones to need to
'do the work' when working with Apple/Mac-generated data, when they do not
have the add-ons)

I realize that changing the extension doesn't change the contents, but (a)
AIUI, Apple doesn't use file extensions to begin with, and (b) Windows can't
handle four-letter file extensions, so I thought that might help. But if the
TIFF is an Apple-flavored one that Windows/Word can't handle, then you'll
have to ask the sender to supply it in a different format.

Suzanne,
Thank you for that info! That info on Apple is news to me!
I will ask *another* person, with a MAC, with more expertise, to send me a
file.
No wonder I was puzzled by Black Ice's stmt of handling TIFF files, yet
their site offered a TIF file for testing. I am certainly learning from you
all in the process of this ordeal.
SO, does Apple arbitrarily apply the .tiff extension, or does that user have
a choice of which extension is applied to generic data?

I apologize for insulting your intelligence. I've received some otherwise
input elsewhere on another subject, and it carried over to this more-informed
forum.
Thank you for your continued support!
I realize that changing the extension doesn't change the contents, but (a)

Mary has made a helpful suggestion, but to get back to the initial issue.
Since you posted in a Word newsgroup, is the issue that you are wanting to
use the TIFF image in a Word document? If so, note that changing the
extension *might* help in that regard because in that case you're not
wanting to open the file for editing, just to use Insert | Picture | From
File, and I think Word won't "see" it unless it has a TIF extension. That
said, however, there are certain "flavors" of TIFF that Word just can't use,
and this could well be one of them.

Suzanne,
Thank you for that info!

I realize that changing the extension doesn't change the contents, but (a)
AIUI, Apple doesn't use file extensions to begin with, and (b) Windows can't
handle four-letter file extensions, so I thought that might help. But if the
TIFF is an Apple-flavored one that Windows/Word can't handle, then you'll
have to ask the sender to supply it in a different format.

It may help to rename it to xxx.tif (rather than .tiff).

Hi Suzanne,

Well, FWIW, if Windows couldn't handle four character file extensions, then we may all be in a spot of bother with Office 2007 .docx
(et al) file naming, eh? ;)

Windows can support longer file extensions, they're not populated very often as a number of programs, not expecting to deal with
long extensions can be a bit bothersome. You can define
.LongExtension
for example and associate it as a JPEG file or other file type (no spaces in the extension). There are a number of database apps in
use that were setup to look for 3 character file extensions and do need to be changed for inventorying Office 2007 files :)

Of course, sending it by email might not be helpful to others where their computer didn't recognize the extension, but using
homemade extensions is one method some folks use as a 'security' measure.
Some programs will 'see through' the extension and suggest changing the file extension back to the 'correct' one. Irfanview is one
that does that for graphics.
