Hi,
I'm having the same trouble as Steve Goodrich. On my new computer I can't
see thumnail previews of mpg files (can only see an icon).

Other thumbnail previews for jpg files are fine.

I tried typing regsvr32 shimgvw.dll in the start menu but unfortunately it
didn't help.

The thumbnails for mpgs worked fine on my old computer (and still work on
other computers).

Ramesh,
I already tried this, but I did it again and it still does not work.
The strange thing is that I have some MPEG files where the thumbnail is
displayed, but if I select properties for this file and then click "Document
info" and leave properties again by clicking OK without altering the info,
the thumbnail disapears. Pls advise.

Perhaps a corrupt thumbnail cache? See if there is a file named thumbs.db
(hidden file) in that folder. If so, try deleting it.
If the thumbnail preview problem is occuring intermittently, then the
registry setting is not the problem.

There is no hidden file thumbs.db in the folders. I will not say that the
preview problem is intermittent, because if I work with the files in other
context as the one I described for you, the thumbnail may also disapear. I
have no records of when it happens. It is not related to certain folders and
one folder may display thumbnail for some files and others not and I can not
restore any of the missing thumbnails.

Ramesh,

I did a mistake when answering your last question. I apoligize for that !
I do have a hidden "thumbs.db" file in the folders, but only in some
folders. When I delete the file in folders, where I have a preview of
thumbnails with pictures, all the pictures become standard thumbnails. In the
folders where there is no "thumbs.db" file all the thumbnails are standard
type.
With this additional info, I hope you or someone else may be able to help.
Thanks.

I also tried all options you mention, without success.
If thumbs.db is deleted, it is not re-generated.
I found on several sites (French, german, spanish) the same problem listed,
No site provides a solution.
Suggestion: Seems to be an issue for Microsoft to look at.

If thumbs.db is deleted, it is not re-generated.

Thumbs.db will not be recreated for a particular folder if Do not cache
thumbnails is selected in Folder Options.

Do not cache thumbnails
[[Disables automatic storage of folder thumbnails in a cache file. When you
store thumbnail images in a cache file, Windows can reuse them instead of
creating new ones every time you open a folder. If you disable this
automatic storage function, folders that contain thumbnails
might take longer to open.]]

Open Folder Options...
Start | Run | Type: control folders | Click OK |
View tab | UNCheck: Do not cache thumbnails |
Click Apply | Click OK

To re-create the Thumbs.db file, click the folder whose contents you are
trying to view in Microsoft Windows Explorer, and then click Thumbnails on
the View menu.

The thumbs.db file is generated by Windows. It is a
database file containing the small images displayed when you view a folder
in thumbnail view (as opposed to tile, icon, list, or detail view).

Thumbs.db file contains the thumbnails for a particular folder.

Windows XP uses a compressed database file (Thumbs.db) to increase
performance.

If you use Thumbnail views a lot, you may want to UNCheck Do not cache
thumbnails.

Thanks Wesley for the quick answer.
I tried all that, but the thumbs.db is not re-generated even when the "do
not cache thumbnails" is unchecked.
Tried shmedia and shimgvw, recreated the the mpg in the fileextension list
etc.
It becomes really frustrating to see that it is not working.
I see the thumbnails that have been created before upgrading to SP2

Hi Ramesh.

Some MPG thumbs are simply blank, black or greyed out because of the initial
movie content (ie; the first 6 seconds/180 frames are black). It may be
possible he can't view them because of this, which incedently explains why he
can see some but not all.

Open Regedit.exe and navigate to:

John,

Windows XP does not have the thumbnail extractor module for .PDF files. If
you're using Adobe Acrobat Reader for viewing .PDFs, then you need to check
with their support to see if a thumbnail viewer module (shell extension) is
available with them.
