Thumbnail View of Mpegs Crashes Explorer

I had some very old 8mm movies (mid '40's to early '60's) converted to
digital. Some are really big as much as 900 meg. Anyway, I asked for mpeg's
so I would have more flexibility with what I do with them. On my home
desktop system when I try to open a directory or DVD they are in and the
display is "Thumbnail", I get an error that windows is closing down the
program to protect windows and the display resets. On a laptop and a system
at work there is no problem. It was tricky trying to get windows to bring up
the folder as "details" but on the HD I was eventually able to do it while
fighting the resets. They all play back fine.
On another note, how to I set the default view for a DVD/CD drive to details
rather than thumbnail? No matter what I try it goes back to thumbnail and
crashes when it displays.
On a third note, I found out rather quickly that Windows Xp cannot handle a
Data DVD without third party software installed. In my case I'm using Nero.

Little confused about what your saying. I know how to set the view for a
folder. However, I found that when things crash it get's tricky. I can
actually work with the folder while the dialog box shows and I get set it to
view, details. But when things reset, it resets. I fixed the folder I
created on my HD by creating a new folder, set it's view to details, then
opened the old folder, I got the error message, copied the files to the new
folder, then after everything reset I blew away the empty old folder. With
the DVD/CD drive it's tougher. No matter what I set it's view to, it seems
to want to go back when I re-open it. Besides, why is the system having
problems with the mpegs anyway? Is there somewhere in the registry where I
can tell Windows Xp to always open the DVD/CD drive in details view no
matter what kind of files are there.

That worked great running "regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll".
BTW, what's the switch to turn it back on. It would be very usefull to be
able to turn it on and off when needed.

OK, I figured it out. Just leave off the /u.
