Thumbnail re-rendering

As a professional wildlife photographer I use thumbnail view to quickly
browse my photos - about 7800 54MB files. It took many hours to generate the
thumbnails.

I have just completed a copy backup of all these files to external hard
drives.

I now have to re-render the thumbnails. I presume this is because the
accessed file date and time attribute has changed.

Is there anyway to prevent this, either by not changing the accessed date,
or by allowing me to reuse the already generated data.

Thanks,

The 7800 54 MB files, did you mean 54 KB?

Are you using PhotoShop CS or similar program to generate
the thumbnails or XP? Have you set the "view/folder
options" on the Windows Explorer to not cache thumbnails?
You may have options to save contact sheets or a web photo
gallery that would do what you want.

I have those options in PhotoShop Elements 2.0

Hi Jim,

54MB. These are hi res scans, and laterly 32MB digital.

I use PSCS and it's file browser, but find it easier to use
Explorer/Thumbnail view for certain tasks.

I'm not sure about Windows and saving all the thumbnails,
but if you use the PSCS program to make a webpage it creates
a thumbnail of each picture and a link to open the full-res
picture. I don't know if these would run from a CD/DVD but
they would from an external hard drive.
Have you tried using the XP Power Toy Image Resizer to save
each picture at a small size, such as 320x200, it can do
this automatically for a selected range and it just ads a
note to the file name to indicate that it was resized. You
could move all those resized files to a folder and view them
with the Windows picture viewer. But I think the webpage
from PSCS would be better since it links the thumbnail to
the hi-res file. There is also a contact sheet option.

That's about all I can think of at the moment, perhaps you
should ask Adobe for their advice, too.

The Thumbs.db file that holds cached thumbnails is a 'superhidden' file,
and it is most likely that your copy process did not include it. Have
Folder Options - View set to show Hidden files, and *not* Hide Protected
mode ones, and look for the thumbs.db in each folder concerned; copy
into the corresponding folder in the backup

Thanks for your input, Jim. I guess I will have to see what other methods I
can incorporate into my workflow.

Hi Alex,

Thanks for this. The problem lies with the thumbnails having to be
regenerated in the original folders after I have done a copy backup.

This appears to be because the accessed date and time stamp is changed by
the copy.

As Jim has suggested, possibly I should look to a different method for my
workflow.
