thumbnail mismatch?

I have been using Windows XP home edition, version 5.1, service pack 2.

I have been using the "disk explorer", sometimes, but not always, in
view mode "filmstrip", to move and rename pictures. Now I find that
many thumbnails do not match the actual image. I've lost hours of
work, and my pictures/files are a mess. What did I do wrong. I expect
I'll have to start all over, because I can't see how to "fix" this, but
how can I avoid this in the future?

Is there a place that discusses this? I have searched, but find only
discussions about Photoshop. I have not used Photoshop for this work,
though it is on my machine.

Thanks for any help/advice

Um, one more piece of info, now that I've searched around more. My
folders seem to be set in the "tools" to "cache thumbnails". That is,
in the folder views options area, I did NOT have the box marked "do not
cache thumbnails" checked, so I assume thumbnails were cached. My
folders/pictures are NOT in the "My Pictures" folder, they're just out
on the C drive in a separate place, but I have been moving them around
and renaming them while in the "filmstrip" view mode. Was this a big
mistake?

Rebuild the thumbnail cache by deleting the hidden file named THUMBS.DB in
that folder.
