thumbnail cache doesnt seem to be helping display thumbnails quickly

every time I browse a folder of 360 image files, it takes a few seconds
for each screenful of files to show the thumbnails instead of a generic
icon. Seems this feature is working about as poorly as Indexing, which
i've turned off, as explorer can't find files with it enabled.

The loading of 'thumbnails' depends on other factors ie; your computers
specifications,- cpu, memory, graphics card specs, other programs running,
how many folders, pictures each time, size of files.
When you say a few seconds 5, 10, 20, 1min. How long is a few seconds?
Computer details would help to give an informed explanation!!!!
