This program sucks 2 (do you want to know?)

Just to let you know I think the way this program currently handles things
stinks.
XP PRO, SP2, up-to-date with available fixes, purring like a kitten.
Along comes last automatic update to M$ Antispyware silently intruducing
Software Distribution Services 2.0 (according to my restore points
calendar) amongst other things probably.
Don't you just hate it when software from a legitimate company, that
proports to be any good and is supposed to twart malware, spyware and the
like, f*cks up worse than any malware I've ever had the pleasure to
entertain.
As a result of this last update all shortcuts on my desktop, in my quick
lauch toolbar or when I double-click on a document or program in explorer,
no longer functions 'as supposed', ie. starts the associated program.
Instead it just happily opens up the Properties dialog for that item. End
of Story.
The only way to get anything going turned out to be right-click and
'Open'. Guess what?
M$ Antispyware went in the trashcan.
And, guess what, all is back to normal.!
Maybe, just maybe, I'll have a look at it again when it does what it
promises WITHOUT messing up the normal bahaviour of the system.
Meanwhile all the other, not so big players in this arena, with infinite
less resources, have done a hell of a better job.
Never had ANY trouble with them.
Kudos guys.

That's unfortunate George, however you can't blame MS for that. You have to
blame the dumb guy named "George" who downloaded and installed a Beta1
application thinking it was an "upgrade" and expecting it to work
perfectly. :)

If Microsoft AntiSpyware is not your cup of tea George, no one is stopping
you from uninstalling it.

Ah well Andre, as you can tell I have little patience with dumb people who
use computers, regardless of the operating system. :)

I understand Bill. I admire your patience. :)

What are you talking about?

There have been no automatic updates to the code of Microsoft Antispyware
during the beta period.

Microsoft Antispyware is not distributed via any automatic update, nor via
Windows Update.

Are you sure this update you speak of isn't from some other beta you may be
participating in?

BTW, here I am on XP Pro using OE. I do know windows very well too even
though I prefer...ahem.....other OSs. :)

To update the definitions--just as you would an antivirus application.

You will notice when you use that function, that it has dialogs for both
definition, and program updates. At least thus far, during the beta, there
have been no program updates.

I do not find anything titled Software Distribution Services much less 2.0
and I have looked on all my MSAS machines in their System Restore and
registry.

I do not find SDS 2.0 on Google either.

MSAS did not load it, you got that from somewhere else. I do not find it at
Windows Update Service either.

I think we need a little more data to help you with your Purported Problem
and I seriously doubt it was MSAS that caused it.

How many p2p apps are you running?

Don't you remember Warp 2.0?

Euhm, warp 2 did not exist. Warp 3 was the first, before it was called
os/2, nowadays its called ecomstation. And it works fine.

I knew someone would remember OS2 Warp!

JohnF,

No p2p running or even installed.
Not 'participating' in any other beta.
From 4/4/05 (date of restore point) up to 4/7/05 nothing
else was installed/deinstalled and only System
Checkpoints showed up.
Further investigation (Unhide and add ACL for access to
System Volume Information) has revealed the restore point
was associated with an update of AVG (which
happens 'under the covers' on this system).
I blamed Antispyware because of the dialog box that came
up offering to update definitions that I accepted, and
that still 'stuck in my mind' as having seen pass by.
The fact that, maybe unjustified, simply uninstalling
Antispyware cleared the problem, definitely threw me off
the right track.

Is there an 'undo' function for
unwarranted 'ranting'? :-!

And Linuxgirl I hear you and I agree, I should have known
better then to use a beta product on a machine that is a
means to doing all sorts of stuff, and not an end.

Anyway, thanks for having a good giggle at my expense.

:))

?

............

That is rubbish. Thanks to MSAS, i've got rid of almost
40 spyware programs. It's probably something sad, like
you're thick, downloaded the program from the wrong
place, or your operating system is f***ed up.

And, if i'm wrong, ever heard of BETA? IT MEANS THAT
IT'S A F***ING TEST, NOT THE ACTUAL PROGRAM!!! Unless
MSAS actually helped the spyware, then it hasn't done any
f***ing thing wrong.

Get a life...

G

george

I've heard of beta.

And while we're at it, I've also heard of 'intelligent'
a******s who manage to visit enough dodgy sites and
download and install enough 'legitimate' stuff to end up
with almost 40 spyware programs on their system.

You also seem to have a faulty keyboard or is this a case
of error-code PEBKM!

Hope your bloodpressure is OK again by now.
If not, try installing some more spyware to see if that
helps.

J

JohnF.

Severe aggravation can definitely distract your attention -

Thanks for figuring out where the SDS 2.0 came from - I was hoping you
would. I'm too curious.

I think we've all ranted and then wished there was a "Fix" button for it
afterward! ; )
