I am thinking of upgrading from ME to XP and was wondering if my ME software
will work in XP.

1-I use Word 97 mostly. Will it run under XP?
2-I have Word 2000, but never installed it. Will it run under XP?

Worthwhile to upgrade?
3-How would you rate DOS emulation of XP -- I run some DOS programs and
wonder if
they will run in XP (e.g., WordStar for DOS)?
4-Some say I should stick with ME. I like to remain current with my
operating systems--
so I thought I would upgrade. What am I gaining by upgrading?

Thanks in advance.

Your two versions of WORD will run fine.
It is time to can the WordStar! Just learn Word! But there is DOS emulation
if you need it.
There is tremendous functionality. See this site:
http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/hardware/desktops/0,39001729,21204009,00.htm

"Windows XP-Home Edition is a much stabler operating system
than Windows 98 or Me could ever hope to be. The main thing that
sets Windows XP Home Edition apart from Windows 98/Me is the
core of the new operating system, called the Kernel. The Kernel
is based on advanced technology developed for Windows NT
(and enhanced for Windows 2000) rather than on good old DOS,
or the so-called Windows 9x Kernel. This fact alone gives the new
home user oriented operating system much greater stability. "

upgrade to xp and also might consider upgrading other
software. these old stuff will someday be of of date and
might be real painful to change from. even xp is to be
replaced in a few years. computerese is always changing
and something new is around the corner.

then again i am still using address book dated c:1992 on
my xp. it opens in dos look-like window and have to use
my old dos3.1 to print out the book.

Haven't tried Wordstar, for instance. Mostly games. Some run fine, some need
some work, some just don't like it. There are alternative emulators, though,
such as Bochs (from sourceforge.net - free) to try, as well, though.

Getting rid of WinME is reason enough... Stability, for one. Better handling
of multiple users. Actual security for multiple users (using NTFS and
keeping folders private, as opposed to "hit cancel and skip the login
screen.") Better handling of running multiple programs and keeping them from
colliding with one another.

For an improvement from WinME, you can go to either XP/2k or 98SE. WinME is
horrid.
