There was an error when trying to run Frontpage (Open as HTML):

I am suddenly getting this message when attempting to work on our Web Page.
I can not find reference to it in any of the knowledge bases or in this
forum. Is anyone familiar with it and its cause?

It ends after the colon :)) The command failed

When I attempt to open a '.htm' page to see and edit in Front page, I get
this error:

'There was an error when trying to run Frontpage (Open as HTML): The command
failed'

I can not open any 'htm' files. I can open them from other apps, Internet
Explorer has no problems at all. It seems to be a Frontpage issue.

With FP opened first can you Open your existing Web / Site on your local
machine?

Were these html pages you are trying to open created by you...are they part
of your web? or are they html created by Word or something else.

Download and run Steve Easton's FPCleaner and give that a shot see if that
helps.

Thanks for responding. Let me answer you questions and give you a little
more information.
1) With FP running I can open the website locally with IE. I can also view
the folders with FP, but can not open an HTM file for modification or even
viewing with FP.
2) I created these files originally using FP and I can view and modify them
from another PC that has FP loaded on it. So the focus is on my PC.
3) I have downloaded the FP cleaner and have run it, but it has not had any
affect. I have also totally did the Microsoft Uninstall of FP and Reloaded
fresh, again with no affect. So I am now at a point where I am at a total
loss.

Very open to suggestions.....

Thanks,
Brad

An uninstall / reinstall should have cleared things up providing you
restarted the machine before the reinstall.

However :

Open FrontPage but not a web.
Click Tools > Options > and click the configure editors tab.
Scroll down to: htm dhtml dwt jhtml pht ssi
Click on it and make sure that in the list of editors the top line
reads:
FrontPage (Open as HTML)(Default)

If it reads differently change it, if the entry is missing press Alt+N
on your keyboard
and select FrontPage (Open as HTML)(Default) from the list that appears.

Close and reopen FrontPage and see what happens.

I did check this out and went to the 'configure editors tab' (nothing except
Front page was open without a web). The screen all ready displayed 'FrontPage
(Open as HTML)(Default)', but just to be sure, I deleted that and reset as
default. No change, problem still exists.

Close FrontPage.
Click Start > Run and type in: regedit and click OK

Click the plus signs until you are here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\FrontPage\Explorer\FrontPage
Explorer\Mappings

Click the plus by Mappings and scroll down to and click once on the key
labeled:
htm dhtml dwt jhtml pht ssi

Note: if you aren't using FP2003 it will read: htm dhtml jhtml pht
ssi

In the right panel, the Data for the value name 0 should read similar to
this
for FrontPage 3003:
FrontPage (Open as HTML),C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\OFFICE11\FRONTPG.EXE,html

and this for FrontPage 2002:

FrontPage (Open as HTML),C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\OFFICE10\FRONTPG.EXE,html
