The word on SP3?

K

Ken

I am building a new computer and will do a fresh install of XP. My
install disk is WinXP SP2. I know that XP3 is due to be out soon. Do
we have any idea how the beta testing is going? What is the better
strategy: WinXP with updates through Windows Update or WinXP with SP3?

Thanks

There Won't Be Any Retail Or OEM Integrated Copies Of Windows XP Service
Pack 3, Just FYI. You Will Instead Have 2 Create Your Own Integrated
Copy Yourself, Update 2 It Through Windows Update Or Else Buy An
Integrated Copy Of Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack One, Just FYI.

Oh. OK. Thanks for the heads-up. I thought it would at least be put
on a website for download.

Thanks

It will be, when it is released, which is likely to be "soon".

I would personally download the entire SP3 file when it is available and
slipstream the SP2 CD with the download.

As to whether to wait or not, that depends on whether you need that computer
soon or not.

Hello,
Your time frame is the factor.
SP3 will be presented on line for download, at sometime a CD wil be issued,
shipping cost may be charged.
If you download the full SP3 and save the file, you should be able to
slipstream.
It is set up for Windows XP SP1a and above to be able to install the
product. Your install disc shoud be fine for installing and/or slipsteaming
SP3. Sometime between end of April to the end of June the product may be
issued. A guess.

take care.

In UK SP3 CDs will be available at certain high street shops of PC World and
Dixons. Also most monthly magazines will include CDs in their July Edition
which is normally out in June!

Incorrect. There will be integrated copies of XP Home and Pro, but not MCE
or Tablet.

Actually, the word in the trade press is that it goes to manufacturing as
early as today. Availability will be on TechNet and MSDN. The April 29th
date is the reported date for availability on WU.

Today is supposed to be release day for SP3 to OEMs and members of
TechNet only. I presume it will make it to the P2P web sites at some
point though. General public release is supposed to be next Monday
from the MS website.

Microsoft said today that it has finished Windows XP Service Pack 3, the
latest bundle of fixes and updates for the PC operating system, which is now
more than 6 years old...

Here is Microsoft's statement on the service pack and availability.

"Windows XP SP3 includes previously released updates for the operating
system, as well as a small number of new fixes and additions that should not
significantly change the Windows XP experience. Windows XP SP3 will be
released to the web (RTW) on April 29, 2008, and Automatic Update
distribution for users at home will begin in early summer."

yet).

Update:

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Released to Manufacturing
<QP>
Today we are happy to announce that Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) has
released to manufacturing (RTM). Windows XP SP3 bits are now working their
way through our manufacturing channels to be available to OEM and Enterprise
customers.

We are also in the final stages of preparing for release to the web (i.e.
you!) on April 29th, via Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center.
Online documentation for Windows XP SP3, such as Microsoft Knowledge Base
articles and the Microsoft TechNet Windows XP TechCenter, will be updated
then. For customers who use Windows XP at home, Windows XP SP3 Automatic
Update distribution for users at home will begin in early summer.
