I have a friend who is using dialup connection and wish to update his WinXP
SP2 to SP3. So I download the following file for him

xpsp3_5512.080413-2113_usa_x86fre_spcd.iso

But we don't know how to use that file to install SP3.

Would some one please give use step by step instructions as to how to use
that file to install SP3.

Thanks in advance.

Charles.

You need to use a cd burner software to burn the ISO to a CD. Its an
image of a cd rom. Its not a file.

Google 'how to burn iso' there are examples using different software
programs. But you need a 3rd party program.

Once burned it will be a cd that is just like one ordered from Microsoft.

Download a free image burning utility "ImgBurn", use this
to create the CD. An ISO module functions something like a
Zip module or image file.
http://www.imgburn.com/
Once you install ImgBurn, just Right Click the .Iso file and
you'll see a context option to "Burn using ImgBurn"- Left click
that option to burn the disk.

Now I'm curious. How come you couldn't just *save* the file to a
cd-rw...then *open* it up at the other computer, and download it that way? I
gather you can't, but I don't know why.

An iso is a binary file like a zip. It can't be read by XP out of the
box. You need something like winiso or poweriso program to view it,
much like you need winzip to read a zip. Its an binary image of every
byte of data on the CD. But its a file you can move around. And like
a file you can put it on a CD or DVD if it fits. And since its contains
the only the data and directory and mapping parts of the CD, its usually
less size that the max size of your cd so it usually fits on the cd as a
file.
Yes you could put the iso on a CD and move it to another pc but unless
you have winiso to extract it (and you can) then you can't do anything
with it there.

Because it is an ISO image, and needs to be converted.

Because it is an .ISO image file. You don't just save it to a CD-RW. You have
to **BURN** it to a CD-RW. To do this you need to use a third party software
like NERO or ROXIO.

Hope this helps.

R. McCarty replied that imgburn is a good freeware program to make a cd
from the ISO. Check the program out. It looks like a pretty full
featured program. I have nero on my system that came with the cd drive.

Think of it as a cd without the media so that it can be transmitted over the
internet. After you get it you have to add back the media to use it.

This is a double post...I meant to post my question here. But I posted it
two threads down:-( Here it is again:

I know I'm getting on your nerves, (smile) but bear with me. I have USB
flash drives that create more storage, but also creates another drive. I
have a couple that are 4 gig. Would it be possible to download SP3 onto
it...ie...save into drive *F*, then open and install it in another computer?

Sure, as I said, both the exe and the ISO are just files. The exe is
the easiest for people to work with and understand.
But sure, you can download either the ISO or the EXE and put them on a
USB and move them. Both are under a 600 meg so they'll go on your 4
gig easy.

Same answer as before:
Yes.

Just one thread this time...thanks for the answers. This is how I learn, by
reading these threads, and asking questions. Before long I'll be helping
folks.

Reading these messages is a real learning experience for sure. Sorry
thing to say, but most people don't realize this 'asset'. I've picked
up so many links to interesting info. You don't need problems to have
fun here.
