The ultra-annoying quick launch

I have Quicktime installed on my computer. It loads itself in some form every
time I boot, as I see the icon for it in the Quick Launch area. I am very
paranoid about having "extra" stuff on my computer (allow almost no cookies,
don't like extra programs running, etc.). How do I get rid of this thing,
not just for the session, but for it not to be there on reboot?

Thanks.

Right-click on the QuickTime icon in the system tray.
Select QuickTime Preferences and remove the checkmark
next to "QuickTime system tray icon", then close the window.

Next, go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Look under the Startup tab for "qttask" and uncheck the box
next to it, then click "apply" and reboot.

I'm not sure about what you mean by "Quick Launch".
Quick Launch is a series of, usually shortcuts, that are right next to Start
button. Some people have multi Quick Launches, and the main one is the one
that has Show Desktop icon. If you don't want Quick Launch, then turn it off
by right-click Start -> Properties -> Check off Show Quick Launch.

If you meant by icons right next to the clock, these are called Icon
Tray.(I'm not sure if this is the official title for it) You can set them NOT
to appear by Start -> Run -> type "msconfig" -> [Enter] -> at the far right
menu, Startup, click Disable All -> Ok, then you have an option to either
restart or exit without restart. One thing you must keep in your mind is that
after you disable any part of startup setting I just told you, the window
about System Startup Utility <- something like this will pop up after you
restart. You can simply check Don't show this message again then click ok.

Check from Start, Run, 'msconfig', Startup tab, if something related to Quick Time is loading at startup. If so, clear the mark, close Msconfig and restart XP.

Please don't do this! You almost certainly *do not* want to disable all
your startup programs -- this could prevent your AV and firewall, as
well as other essentials, from running.

Not every startup program shown in msconfig will have a systray icon
anyway; many don't. Telling people to disable all their startup programs
just to get rid of an icon is ridiculous!

Sorry, Tsuniper-X, but this is really dangerous advice.

I'd suggest just using msconfig to troubleshoot, not as a permanent
solution. If you spot any QuickTime file listed there, look to see where
msconfig says it is starting from -- a registry key or a Startup folder
perhaps -- and deal with it there.

Thanks.

Along with the other suggestions you've received, you might
want to search your computer for the qttask.exe file and rename
it something like qttask.exe.old. On my system it's located in
the Program Files\Quicktime folder.

If you don't rename it, you're going to find that every time
you launch Quicktime it puts an entry for qttask.exe back in
the registry. Also, renaming this file has no impact on your
ability to use Quicktime. It runs just fine with that file
being renamed.

To test this try the following:
As has been suggested, run msconfig, click on the Startup Tab
and remove the check mark next to qttask.exe.
Reboot and put a check mark in the box when you see the
notification about running in Diagnostic mode.
Now go to this web site and launch the Quicktime Demo.
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/player/win.html
Go back and check msconfig.
You'll find a new entry for qttask.exe with a check mark next
to it.

Good luck
