The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contact

Hi There

Have a laptop which I just reformatted the C drive with and have done a
fresh clean install of Windows XP Home Edition. This was after several
attempts at using the recovery console, and when that failed I did a full
reformat in NTFS a clean install.

When I chose not to activate right now but later, screen then came up with
User Name for myself and asking for a password, of which I had not allocated.
That being said I attempted to enter every password that I have had on the
laptop and continuously getting the following:

Logon Message:
The system cannot log you on due to the following error:
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.
Please try again or consult your system administrator.

Does anyone have any suggestions please.

Thanks in advance

That is what I thought would be the case two.

I did try that several times leaving it blank and just hitting enter but the
same message still came up.

Hi

Thanks for trying to help us out here. Just curious what the one method to
get around it was your suggesting as I cannot see anything to indicate what
your referring too.

I've seen this before, and outside of people with snide remarks or no
help at all, I haven't seen a fix here yet. Yes, windows XP home CAN
HAVE THIS ERROR. Most of the time it is a bad hard drive. Use
something like Hitachi Drive Fitness Test to see if there is an easily
detectable problem with the drive. Also, if for some strange reason you
have a good hard drive sitting around, you can try installing to it and
copying things over. For laptop, get a USB external hard drive box to
put the old drive in to copy over your data. I'll post more if I find
any more info. Yeah, old post, but people are still looking for a
solution.

Agree with the snide comments and lack of help. I tried using a Linux password
hack and resetting all accounts (Admin, Owner, Guest) to unlocked and blank
password. Still getting "The specified domain either does not exist or could
not be contacted". Even starting in safe mode doesn't bypass the logon
issue. It does seem to be a hardware issue.
